Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi said while speaking at a Congress rally in Kanpur as part of his Congress campaign in Uttar Pradesh had alleged that neither Mulayam Singh Yadav nor Mayawati visited Bundelkhand when the area was badly hit by drought and the people were struggling. “Where was Mulayam Singh or Mayawati when the people of drought-hit Bundelkhand were crying for relief? Rahul Gandhi asked. Rahul Gandhi had spearheaded the campaign for Congress in Uttar Pradesh in the recently held assembly elections.
Explaining the efforts taken by him for sanctioning a relief package for Bundelkhand, Rahul Gandhi informed, “Mayawati, being the Chief Minister, did not find it necessary to visit Bundelkhand. Mulayam Singh also did not go there. No one was there to help them. I took a delegation to the Prime Minister and without any delay he approved a package of Rs. 8000 crore for the relief of the region”. “But that amount was looted by the Mayawati Government. The tractors sent for the farmers went to the Minister’s kids. This money was the result of your sweat and blood,” commented the Congress leader.
Rahul Gandhi continued his speech referring to the weaver’s package, “The weavers also had approached us. They complained that no-one from SP or BSP listened to their worries. We, therefore, took them to the Prime Minister. Prime Minister immediately approved a relief package for them. We extended them maximum help by way of waiving off loans and Bunkar’s credit card”.
“But the poor Bunkars had approached us again with another request. They pleaded us not to send the money meant for them to Lucknow as they feared that those funds also will be looted by the state Government,” added Rahul Gandhi.
