Once again charisma of Congress scion Rahul Gandhi has ushered a responsible and mature reform for Indian politics. Resources reveal that he is quietly exerting his influence on the functioning of the Manmohan Singh government. It has now emerged that Rahul was at least partly responsible for the PM's insistence that Union ministers' spouses and children should also disclose their assets. This would make the assets declaration issue more transparent.
AICC General Secretary has been quite in news these days. That ministers' kin should also come clean on their wealth and properties was Rahul's idea and he had written to the PM about it. As expected, it was promptly acted upon, with the government publishing the assets of not just ministers but also their close relatives in September this year. The move strengthened Congress’s stand of transparency in electoral processes.
Sources say Rahul had also asked for an account of the wealth owned by ministers' parents but that request has not yet been acted upon. Nevertheless, the important role of Rahul cannot be denied.
