Blaming the leaders like Mayawati of BSP and Mulayam Singh Yadav of SP for ‘disconnect’ with the people, Congress (I) General Secretary Rahul Gandhi has said, “I have been to the houses of farmers and artisans during the past seven years of my political career. And I have learnt more from them than I did from my teachers at prestigious educational institutions in America and England.” Had these leaders done so, they would have been able to appreciate the wisdom of the common man, said Rahul Gandhi while addressing public meeting at Soraon on February 11 for ongoing Assembly elections. Leaders of these parties have never bothered to visit remote villages and meet the poorest of the poor, he added. Explaining his point, Rahul Gandhi said only during his interaction with villagers ‘we’ came to know that they wanted employment near their houses. So Rs 60,000 crore MNREGA scheme was launched. But in stead of giving employment to the poor, Mayawati called it unnecessary and let her BSP elephant swallow the entire money and the poor got nothing. Now she is opposing Food Security Bill for the poor because she neither meet the poor nor know their needs, he further said. Highlighting that Congress (I) stands with the villagers, farmers and the poor and will continue to work for their betterment, Rahul Gandhi urged them this time to vote for his party and assured that Congress (I) government would be pro-poor and ensure that the benefits of the welfare schemes reach them without fail.
